Free Saigon Food Tour with Students from Saigon Hotpot

Traveling to a new city is always exciting, but there's nothing quite like exploring it through the eyes (and taste buds!) of the locals. On my recent trip to Ho Chi Minh City, we had the unique opportunity to join a free half-day food tour led by Saigon Hotpot. This student-run initiative not only gives tourists a chance to dive deep into Saigon’s vibrant food scene, but also allows local college students to practice their English. My guide, Hanny, was as passionate about food as she was about showing us the hidden gems of her beloved city.

A Unique, Student-Led Food Tour

Saigon Hotpot was created with a mission to bridge cultural exchange and language learning. The program allows college students like Hanny to guide tourists through their hometown while honing their English-speaking skills. It’s a win-win for both parties: travelers get a taste of authentic Vietnamese life, while the students improve their language fluency. From the moment we met Hanny, her enthusiasm for both Saigon’s food and its cultural heritage was infectious. She made the entire experience feel personal and immersive, sharing stories about her favorite spots, many of which are off the beaten path for most tourists.

Savoring the Best of Vietnamese Street Food

One of the biggest highlights of this tour was the opportunity to try Saigon’s best street food. We ventured into small alleys and tucked-away stalls, places that tourists wouldn’t normally stumble upon. Our first stop was a shop selling bánh mì, Vietnam’s famous baguette sandwich. The crispy mini baguette, packed with pâté and savory meats, was a perfect introduction to Saigon’s street food scene. Next we stopped by a local favorite spot which features Duck with Egg Noodles in a spicy broth and it was a true delight. Our last stop was a chic cafe out in District 10 whereby we had to cut short visiting the 4th location due to the heavy rain.

Connecting with Locals Over a Meal

One of the most special aspects of the Saigon Hotpot tour is the opportunity to connect with locals. It was about human connection, about learning from each other and breaking down cultural barriers while have a better understanding of Vietnam through the next generation perspective.

The Spirit of Giving: Saigon Hotpot’s Charitable Side

Beyond the food tours, Saigon Hotpot also plays a role in giving back to the community. Each year, they organize a program called "Sky Lantern" to support underprivileged children in rural areas. Hanny explained that many of the students involved in Saigon Hotpot volunteer their time for this program, showing their dedication to not only tourism but also social causes.

My half-day food tour with Saigon Hotpot was an unforgettable experience, and I can’t recommend it enough. Whether you're a foodie or simply want to explore Ho Chi Minh City through a local’s eyes, this tour offers a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and community. Hanny’s passion for her city, combined with the unique student-led nature of the tour, made this a truly one-of-a-kind experience. And the best part? It’s free!
